GUIDE TO RECORD SOCIETIES AND THEIR PUBLICATIONS

The Royal Historical Society has now assumed responsibility for the online supplement to E.L.C. Mullins' Texts and Calendars: an analytical guide to serial publications (covering publications since 1982) and to the Stevensons' Scottish Texts and Calendars (covering publications since 1985), which was previously maintained by the Historical Manuscripts Commission. The Society has now made available a list of the societies and other bodies whose publications are covered.

The list gives access to a detailed page for each society which links in turn to a display of that society's publications as listed on the Royal Historical Society bibliography. We will be trying to make sure that the bibliography's coverage of each society's publications is complete and up to date (for example, we are adding, for the sake of completeness, bibliographical information about record publications of these societies that do not cover British or Irish history). The long-term aim is to provide information on all of a society's record publications, irrespective of publication date, without having to consult the printed Texts and Calendars volumes for earlier publications, and to give more detailed information about the volumes than was available from the lists published by the HMC; societies which ceased to publish before the start of the HMC list are therefore gradually being added to the online list.

Any corrections or additions to the lists will be gratefully received. Please email the RHS bibliography or use the bibliography's online feedback forms.

Some earlier societies are not yet included in the list, but their publications may be in the online bibliography. You can search the online bibliography for items from any series, even if it is not yet included in the list.

  • Go to the search menu;
  • in step 1, leave the selection at "all titles";
  • in step 2, click on "Full search";
  • on the resulting Full search form, type the start of the name of the series that you wish to find (e.g. Roxburghe) into the Journal or series text box;
  • you can then click on the index button to the left of the text box to see a list of the journals and series contained in the bibliography starting with what you have typed;
  • click the arrow next to the series in which you are interested (e.g. Roxburghe Club) to insert its full title in the search form;
  • you are now returned to the form and can click the Search button;
  • results are displayed by date of publication, with the most recent first; click on a title to view a record in more detail, or, to view several records at once, mark the corresponding check boxes and click on View marked records.

If you wish, you can use the other fields on the Full search form to restrict your search by date of publication, or by any other criterion of interest.
