SUBJECT CLASSIFICATION

A subject classification and a hierarchical vocabulary of keywords have been devised to assist in the indexing of material added to the bibliography. In the online version this scheme is used for indexing all post-1992 publications and an increasing number of earlier ones.

You can search or browse the classification scheme while carrying out a search. On our search menu page, click the Full search button in the right-hand half of the page and then, on the Full search form, click the index button on the Subject classification line. The subject classification display will open, showing the top level terms of the scheme.

  • For a hierarchical display of the contents of each category, click on the "+" next to the category heading.
  • To search the scheme for a particular term, use the search box at the top of the screen. It is best to truncate your term - e.g. if you are interested in 'Agriculture', try entering 'Agricultur' and you will see terms beginning with 'Agricutural' as well as with 'Agriculture'. (Alternatively, you can enter the topic in which you are interested in the Subject classification field before clicking on the Index button and any matches will be displayed when the list opens.)
  • To launch a search of the Bibliography for your selected term, click on the arrow to the left of the term (when you have opened the tree using the "+" button, and no arrow is available next to a term, click on the term itself first). The term will then be inserted in our Full search form; click on Search to launch your search (or you can add other search criteria first, for example by specifying a period covered).
  • Searches are generic - when you enter a term, the system automatically searches for all terms located below it in the hierarchy.

You can also consult the subject classification when you select the Search builder option from the Search menu.

Links to further help are provided on the subject classification display.

Suggestions for additions and amendments are welcome; please email us (or you can fill in the online form).
