Tutorials

To supplement the context sensitive help available throughout the Bibliography, we have prepared a number of tutorials to introduce you to the Bibliography and its features. You can view the tutorials either as Word documents or in pdf format; in each case, you can read them on-screen, but you can also choose to save the tutorial to disk. You will need to have either Microsoft Word or (for the pdf files) Adobe Acrobat reader installed on your computer to use the tutorials; if you do not have Adobe Acrobat reader installed, you can download it for free.

  • Brief introduction: a one page summary explaining the scope of the Biblciography and listing its main features.
  • Simple and Full search: explains the most commonly used searching techniques, including the use of browsable indexes and combining search criteria for targeted searching.
  • Search Builder: using Search builder for maximum flexibility: use repeated instances of the same field and select Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT). This tutorial assumes that you are already familiar with Full search.
  • Using your results: how to get the most from the search results displays, including links to library catalogues and online text.
  • The tutorials are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial 2.0 UK: England & Wales Licence, which means that you are free to copy and modify them for non-commercial purposes, provided you credit the Institute of Historical Research. Click on the logo below for more details:
