Z39.50

Z39.50 is a standard that allows different information retrieval systems to communicate effectively behind the scenes (for full information about Z39.50, see http://www.loc.gov/z3950/agency/). The RHS Bibliography has now been set up as a Z39.50 server which means that, as well as searching the Bibliography through its own interface, it is possible to search the Bibliography using a Z39.50 client and, depending on the client used, to combine results from the Bibliography with results from other databases and to reformat them as required.

Users of EndNote, one of the most popular Z39.50 clients, should find that a connection file for the RHS bibliography (called "Bib of Brit and Irish Hist (RHS)") is included if they purchased or updated their EndNote software recently.

  • If your version of EndNote does not include the appropriate connection file, you can download it from ftp://support.isiresearch.com/pub/pc/connections/Bib of Brit and Irish Hist (RHS).enz.
  • Alternatively, you can download our simplified connection file, which enables you to search on the fields that we think are likely to be most useful, and includes right truncation so that searching is similar to using the bibliography's own online interface. This connection file has been tested using EndNote 7 and EndNote X running under Windows.
  • To download the connection file, click on the appropriate link above, select the option to save the file to your computer, and place it in the appropriate folder in your EndNote program directory (usually located in Windows - C:\Program Files\EndNote\Connections or in Mac OS X - Harddrive: Applications: EndNote: Connections; if you have the latest version of EndNote, then you may need to replace "EndNote" with "EndNote X1" in the directory path). Both connection files incorporate all the settings listed below; once you have downloaded either file and placed it in the correct folder, you should be able to search the Bibliography straight away.
  • To connect to the Bibliography from EndNote for the first time, select Tools, then Connect (or, for EndNote X1, Online search), and then Connect ... (or, for EndNote X1, New search ...); you can then select the connection by scrolling through the list or using the Find facility (EndNote's connection file will appear as "Bib of Brit and Irish History (RHS)"; our own connection file will appear as "RHS_Bibliography"). Once you have connected to the Bibliography it will automatically be added to your "Favorites" list.

Users of BookWhere, another popular Z39.50 client, should find that the "Royal Historical Society Bibliography of British and Irish History" is already available on the Choose databases menu if they have AutoSync enabled. The following guidance is based on testing with BookWhere 5.0.5:

  • If AutoSync is not enabled, you can add the RHS Bibliography by right-clicking on an existing database in the Choose databases menu and selecting New database from the context menu. Then follow our guidance on completing the database properties sheet.
  • You can also read our guide to the fields available on the simple search tab of the BookWhere Search Query dialogue.
  • All searches done from the simple search tab are carried out without truncation; to enable right truncation (which is supported in most bibliography fields and is especially useful for improving results from subject searching) you must select the Power tab and, when you have selected a field, click on the Extra attributes... button in the Search field dialogue box. From the drop down box under Truncation, select "Right truncation".
  • In the detailed display of RHS Bibliography records, BookWhere formats some fields as hyperlinks so that you can launch a new search. Unless the hyperlink consists of a single word, these searches will not produce any results since, to give you the fullest results when using BookWhere's selected simple search fields, we have used word indexes, rather than term indexes, for the author and subject heading fields.

Other Z39.50 clients are available, and you may find the guidance provided by COPAC helpful.

Not all the features that are available in the Bibliography's own interface can be replicated in Z39.50. Restriction of results by a range of publication dates and restriction by period covered are not possible, although you can search for individual publication dates through use attribute 31 or use attribute 1102. You cannot carry out generic searches, so searching by Subject classification (use attribute 47) and by Place index (use attribute 58) will not yield the same results as the equivalent fields in our online interface. We recommend that subject searching via Z39.50 is carried out using Subject (free text) (use attribute 1099) supplemented by Person as subject (use attribute 1009).

We welcome feedback or questions by e-mail or through our online feedback form, although we regret that we cannot advise you on configuring specific Z39.50 clients.

3. Relation attributes
Equals (relation attribute 3) is the only relation attribute that is supported, except for Use attribute 1102 (Date of publication): relation attributes 1 (less than), 2 (less than or equal), 4 (greater than or equal) and 5 (greater than) are also available for this field.

4. Position attributes
In word indexed fields (structure attribute 6 in list above), position attribute 3 (any position in field) is supported. In phrase indexed fields (structure attribute 1 in list above), position attribute 1 (first in field) is supported.

5. Truncation
Right truncation (truncation attribute 1) is supported, as is Do not truncate (truncation attribute 100). If right truncation is used in word indexed fields, each search word will be truncated.

6. Boolean operators
Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT are supported, but proximity searching is not available.

7. Sorting
Sorting of results is not supported.

Footnotes
1. These values are not defined in our database and are our estimate of what would be appropriate on the basis of http://www.loc.gov/z3950/agency/defns/bib1.html#structure. We have not attempted to provide a structure value for fields that we do not envisage being used in searching. Back to the element set table.
